What happens to the data on my old PC?
Document relates to: PCmover
SUMMARY
When performing a transfer from my old PC to a new PC, will PCmover delete data from my old computer?
SOLUTION
PCmover makes no changes to your old computer. It simply copies files and settings from that PC to the new one. Although you should always make regular back-ups of valuable data on your hard drive, the information on your old computer is not in any way endangered by PCmover’s migration process.
SIDE NOTE
That all being said, in our experience transferring thousands of computers per day for 35 years, we’ve seen some interesting things. If your old PC has any sort of startup issues or Windows errors around or after the time of using PCmover, it might not sound nice but it’s a total coincidence. If your hard drive is *actually* failing, and you use PCmover to move data to your new PC — your hard drive is going to be used to move data and it’s totally possible it could fail. That’s not the fault of PCmover though, because Windows is what controls what PCmover can and cannot do. Another thing to keep in mind is that a mechanical hard drive can fail at any moment, which is why we’ll always recommend backing up your data.
