The Laws of PCmover

SUMMARY
PCmover can only action under 2 governing bodies, Windows and the core PCmover Engine.

SOLUTION
If you’re worried about using PCmover, or have used it for years there are a few things to consider when you’re using it to transfer things like user profiles, applications and files.

PCmover Specific:

If there are identically named files, folders or Programs on the old computer and new computer, PCmover will skip the action of moving those items.

-This is a perfect example of the Office Trial message that you may see, where the new PC has a version Office (Trial) already installed from factory and you want to move the Office program from your older PC. You must remove the Office Trial from the new PC to proceed.

Using UNDO feature removes every piece of data moved from the most recent PCmover transfer

-Note: Editing documents after the transfer does not protect them from an UNDO, you should rename those files if they are important and not saved anywhere else.

PCmover does not support going DOWN in Operating System version, only side to side or to a newer version of Windows.

PCmover will transfer your data as fast as your connection will allow it! You will see Windows related speed limitations impeding your transfer speed once you move over 2GB/s

Application Transfer:

  • PCmover can move any application you tell it to, but that doesn’t mean you should or that it will retain 100% functionality after being moved.
    • PCmover automatically classifies applications likelihood of transferring successfully into 3 colors of a stop light.
      • Green: Laplink has tested a version of this application in the past and it was successful at that time.
      • Yellow: Laplink has not tested this specific version of the application, but doesn’t see any reason to warn you against moving it.
      • RED: These applications you should not move and may cause harm to your new computer. Examples of applications that would cause issues are any apps that use or install hard ware drivers, or have special permissions like Anti-virus or Imaging software.

  • While PCmover can move an application to your new PC, it will not make any modifications to that applications code. It will not force the application to run if it’s not compatible with your new PC, It will not hack the licensing of that application to give you unlimited use, and we don’t guarantee 100% of apps will allow being moved.

User Account Transfer:

  • Transferring Domain accounts requires that the target already has domain credentials before the transfer takes place, even if it’s a different domain.

User Settings Transfer:

  • Windows 10 as of this time does not allow applications to customize the taskbar, so unfortunately you will need to re-pin your favorite applications.
  • Tiles in the start menu will automatically sync across your Microsoft Account. The same goes for your
  • If you create a new user account on the old computer to move to the new, you must login at least once to that new user account before moving it.
